Multipplier Reel

Items 1 - 13 of 13

When it comes to sea fishing and targeting the really heavy fish, your fishing equipment needs to be up to the job. In addition to a powerful rod and a reliable fishing line, you need a high-quality multi-reel so that you can take meters from your scaly opponent in the fight with the big catch. Multi-reels are becoming increasingly popular both when fishing in salt water and when hunting large catfish and pike in fresh water.

Focus on the multi-reel

The biggest difference between a multi-reel and a stationary reel is obvious at first glance: unlike stationary reels, multi-reels are attached to the top of the rod. The reel is therefore at a right angle, which minimizes the strain on the rod and also ensures more precise and fine fish contact.

The term „multi“ is derived from multiplier and describes the „translation of your roll in one turn of the crank. With a ratio of four to one, the line reel rotates four times with one turn of the crank. Smaller multi reels, the so-called baitcasters have a high gear ratio and are often used for freshwater fishing. The large multi-reels have a lower speed and are specially designed for use when sea fishing or fishing from a boat.

Left or right?

In contrast to stationary reels, a distinction is made between left-handed and right-handed models for multi-reels. When buying, pay attention to which hand you prefer to crank with.

In addition, there are practical multi-reel models with two-speed gearboxes, which allow you to adjust the gear ratio to suit your requirements. Other models have a drag linkage, which allows you to better check the depth of your vessel at sea. When fishing in saltwater, make sure that your multi-reel is saltwater-proof!

The braking systems

Multi reels come with different braking systems. The star drag is named after a star-shaped drag wheel, which is attached to the multi-reel so that you can control how much line you want to let your opponent have.

In addition to the star drag, there is also the lever drag, also known as „lever drag“. The principle is similar to that of a disc brake on a car. This type of brake is particularly suitable for fishing for large marine fish such as marlin and tuna.

The centrifugal brake primarily prevents line tangling when casting the line. The centrifugal weights built into the spool create high centrifugal forces that slow down the multi-reel. The disadvantage is the shorter casting distance, but in favor of perfect line unwinding.

In contrast to the centrifugal brake, the magnetic brake only slows down the unwinding at the end of the casting phase, which prevents the line from tangling and ensures that the casting distance remains moderate.

The drag system you choose will ultimately depend on your requirements and preferences.
