Eel Rods

Eel Rods

Eels are a strange but very popular angling fish due to their unique body shape and impressive life cycle. However, eels are not only popular in nets, but also in many smokers; They are an excellent alternative to carp, pike and pikeperch. However, in order to catch eels, you need reliable equipment in addition to a capable eel. Above all, the eel rod should be adapted to your fishing technique. Then get the rods out and wait for the first eel bite!

The eel rod

The choice of the right eel rod depends on the fishing method. Depending on the season and water conditions, the eel is caught on the bottom or with a float.

For bottom fishing, it is best to use a medium ground rod or a feeder rod with a length of 2.50 to 3.50 meters. Longer rods are suboptimal, as they cannot exert enough pressure on the eel during the fight. This allows you to quickly reel a large eel ashore without the fish getting stuck on obstacles.

Many anglers use float rods with a length of 2.70 to 3.70 meters when pole fishing for eel. But plug-in rods and telescopic rods also do their job with flying colors. When fishing from a fishing boat, a shorter eel rod is also sufficient and you will be no less successful with it.

The optimum casting weight for your eel rod depends on the chosen fishing method and weight. For bottom fishing in rivers with strong currents, choose a casting weight between 100 to 150 grams. In a lake, on the other hand, you only need a casting weight of 60 to 80 grams.

When float fishing for eel, on the other hand, a casting weight of 40 to 60 grams is enough to get the eel safely into the landing net.

In general, a good eel rod has a strong backbone with a sensitive tip for optimum bite detection.

Tip: Equip your tip with a glow stick holder so you never miss a bite!
