Trolling rods

Trolling from a boat is a popular fishing method for searching large areas of water for hungry predators and catching capacity fish. Trolling can be successfully practised in both saltwater and freshwater. Here, spoons, soft lures or other artificial lures are pulled behind the boat. The choice of a suitable trolling rod is very important for this type of fishing and it should be matched to the respective body of water, the water to be fished and the target fish.

Trolling rods for fishing for sea trout and salmon!

When fishing for trout, on the Baltic Sea, in Norway or other sea areas, trolling from a boat is a very good option. The target fish here are mainly sea trout and salmon. However, large cod can also be caught using this fishing method.

It is important to use trolling rods that are designed for this type of fishing. The bites are often quite hard and the entire rod blank is put to the test. In addition, heavy downriggers are often used in order to be able to guide the trolling rod at certain water depths. The trolling rod should therefore be very robust and have a strong backbone. These sea rods have an average length of between 2.10 m and 2.80 m. Furthermore, they are usually not provided with a casting weight, but with a test curve.

Which trolling rods are suitable for pike fishing

Trolling for pike in freshwater is also great fishing. Especially on reservoirs, quarry ponds, dams and slow-flowing rivers, you can search large areas for predators. Here again, you should use suitable trolling rods. When using large hardbaits, swimbaits or other bigbaits, there is a strong water resistance when trolling, which must be absorbed by the fishing rod. Sufficient power reserves in the rod blank ensure that the rod does not bend too much and the hook can still grip the hard pike's mouth when it bites.

If small spoons, spinners, hardbaits or soft lures are used as pike lures, the light trolling rods with a casting weight of around 100 g are sufficient. A relatively hard rod blank enables a great casting action and a good hooking effect on the strike.

Which artificials can be used with trolling rods?

When trolling in freshwater for pike, pikeperch and perch, you can use the following hardbaits and softbaits:

For sea trout fishing and salmon fishing in saltwater, various sea-bait are recommended, such as:

  • Sea trout spoons
  • sea trout wobbler
  • Salmon spoons
