Spoon – the trout spoon

Spoons, or trout spoons, are small spoon spoons between 0.5 to 4 grams specially developed for trout fishing and originally come from Japan. Thanks to their easy handling and super catching success, trout spoons in all shapes, colors and sizes can also be found in the tackle box of every successful trout angler in this country.

Shape & color

Spoons are available in countless shapes, weights and colors. The shape always influences the running behavior under water and the casting behavior. Narrow trout spoons in particular are easy to cast and run smoothly under water. Rather rounder spoons have a slightly poorer casting behavior, but imitate a more tumbling fish. Mixed shapes are common, which you can use as all-round baits at any time.

In addition to shape and weight, color plays a decisive role in catching fish. As fish have very good color perception, changing the color of your spoon can work wonders. Popular colors are green, yellow, orange, as well as blue, pink and white.

Blue spoons can be easily perceived by fish in deeper waters due to the UV-like wavelengths. Later in the day and in bad light conditions, switching to a blue spoon can be beneficial.

Trout spoon – strike & drill

Unlike when fishing for pike or zander, you must not set the hook immediately, otherwise you will pull the spoon away from the trout's mouth.

Continue cranking even when you make contact with the fish and wait for the final bite. Set the drag so that the fish can take a little line and close it when the fish hooks. Hold the rod with the tip down when reeling in, otherwise you will tempt the trout to jump.
