Spinner

Spinner

Nowadays, artificial lures are becoming more and more crazy and detailed. Beginners in particular are quickly forgetting tried-and-tested pieces of art such as spinners, which have actually proven to be extremely durable over decades. Despite the simple design of the spinners, they are still very effective. The Mepps spinners have proven this over many decades.

Structure & functionality of spinners

A spinner is constructed as follows: The main body is a weight with a treble or single hook attached to the end. At the other end is the so-called spinner blade, which is usually oval and slightly curved. This is only connected to the rest by a hole. This gives it a large amount of freedom of movement when retrieving and creates extremely strong optical bite stimuli for a wide variety of predatory fish.

Some spinners are additionally equipped with a fly, feathers or similar on the hook to create additional air bubbles on the one hand and to better camouflage the hook on the other. However, bear in mind that too much attachment can quickly get caught in weed-covered water and, in the worst case, the spinner could be lost.

Also pay attention to any information on retrieving speed. If the spinning technique is incorrect, the spinning movements can break down and no longer be as effective. In addition, the use of swivels is a must when fishing with spinners. Triple swivels in particular are ideal so that the line does not twist too much despite the spinning movement. If this is the case, the line will tear more easily under strain or on edges in the water and the rig and its hook could be lost.

Application areas & target fish for spinners

They use spinners just like spinners mainly on the surface of the water or close to it. The reflections emitted are particularly attractive for target fish such as trout, whose prey are small fish that the spinners imitate perfectly. Asp and perch are also very fond of the attraction of spinners and are therefore often caught.

If you fish with larger spinners, you may also catch the odd zander and pike. You can even use spinners effectively for sea fishing. To do this, the spinners used must be saltwater-resistant and able to withstand the strain of large sea fish.
