Poppers and stickbaits have become an integral part of artificial fishing. They are special forms of hardbaits and fulfill the same purpose. They have the greatest importance in spin fishing because they are best used to create a realistic bait movement using targeted techniques such as twitching or controlled line retrieval. This realistic movement encourages predatory fish to bite.

Poppers and stickbaits are usually made of hard materials and rarely of soft rubber or similar materials. This is exactly where the difference lies, as they have little or no action due to their construction. As an angler, you are therefore required to operate the rod and reel in such a way as to create the most realistic movement possible.

In addition, stickbaits and poppers do not have diving spoons, which means that the line is not drawn in to create a draught. Both types are therefore used directly under or on the surface. They are most useful in places where the weed reaches just below the surface and fishing at depth is impossible. In addition, visibility is also reduced for the fish and they are more aware of the movements of poppers and stickbaits.

The poppers differ particularly in the way they swim. The diving blade is usually curved upwards in a concave shape or incorporated into the head in this form. When you reel in the line, air accumulates in this bulge and when this air bubble bursts, this popping sound is perceived by the predatory fish and thus attracts them. This is best produced with short rod strokes.

Since popper & stickbaits work due to the jerky movements, it is also up to you to weigh perfectly when you are not moving the bait. It often happens that the desired pike misses when you give the fishing rod a strong jerk at that moment. Patience is therefore required at these critical moments so that the fish does not miss the hook.
