Leads & Tungsten

Leads & Tungsten

Fishing leads have become an indispensable part of angling, as they are used in many fishing techniques for a wide variety of target fish. You use leads in a wide variety of fishing set-ups to achieve better fishing success. In principle, leads fulfill three main functions.

Firstly, they are used as a ground lead to bring the fish to the bottom of the water and keep it there. On the other hand, special shot lead is used for float fishing so that the floats stand properly in the water. Last but not least, the lead weights the fishing line so that it has a higher casting weight and can therefore achieve better casting distances. These are essential prerequisites for long casts when sea fishing on the coast, because without the right leads, even the best surf rod is useless.

Types of lead & areas of application

One specialty, for example, is the surf lead. This has a slim and elongated body and claw-like metal rods attached to the outside. These prevent the lead from sinking into the soft sand.

Most leads owe their name to their shape. Pear and teardrop leads, for example, are bulbous at the bottom and are ideal for bottom and surf fishing. Ball lead is able to roll over the bottom, allowing the body to move even in currents. This effect is beneficial if you want to search a larger area for fish, but is unsuitable if you want to keep the bait in a hot spot.

Coffin and plate-shaped leads are much better suited for this. Due to their shape, they lie securely on the floor and do not move with the flow. However, the casting properties of the two are not the same. The plate lead is much harder to cast than the coffin lead.

Other forms are leads that are clamped onto the line or where the line runs through the lead, as is the case with inline and olive leads. These leads are also known as running leads and are most commonly used for carp fishing.
