Glow sticks, stoppers and beads, along with all the other terminal tackle, complete the equipment of a float angler. While the stoppers and beads are essential for positioning the float, fishing line and lead, the glow sticks are only used for night fishing as lighting on the float or fishing rod to better detect bites. Of course, the beads are also used time and again for other fishing techniques and set-ups.

Main function of stoppers

When rigging a float, the stopper is the first thing that is pulled onto the fishing line. A distinction is made between rubber, wool and thread stoppers. You can tie thread stoppers yourself, but rubber stoppers made especially for this purpose are usually better. With these, you first pull the fishing line through an existing loop and then pull the stopper onto the line.

Please note that you can only attach these stoppers to a line once. If you remove them, it will be difficult to pull the cord through again. The stoppers also determine the position of the float and how deep the entire rig sinks in the water. You can determine the depth you need using a plumb line or depth sounder.

Applications for beads

To prevent the line of the float from slipping over smaller stoppers, attach a bead between the stopper and float to prevent this. The beads are simply small balls, which are usually made of plastic and are available in many colors. You also attach a bead between the running lead and the swivel.

The reason for this is that the lead can otherwise damage the loop on the swivel due to its own movement. In the worst-case scenario, your knot will break and the leader, including the leader hook and hooklink, will be completely lost. With a bead, you can therefore avoid such expensive losses in a cost-effective way.

Glow sticks as bite indicators

Glow sticks are basically the simplest form of optical bite indicators. They are plastic tubes that contain chemicals. If you bend the tube, other chemicals are released from a capsule and a chemical reaction takes place that makes these lights glow for up to twelve hours. Take care when handling them, as they can also break and cause skin or eye injuries and stain clothing.

You simply attach the glow sticks to the tip of the fishing rod or to special glow sticks. If a fish strikes, you can recognize a bite even in the dark and react immediately. This is particularly important in the twilight and at night and is almost indispensable.
