The pike is probably one of the most popular target fish for anglers. The predatory fish is fast as an arrow and unpredictable and makes every angler's heart beat faster. But how do you send the popular predator to the unhooking mat? When fishing for pike, you have several catch options to pursue the fish. Starting with the spoon over wobbler, soft lures through to the baitfish, you have a wide range of variations to choose from, each of which has its own raison d'être. The trick is to choose the right type of bait for the respective day and light conditions in order to be able to hold a big pike in your hands at the end of the day.

Artistic skills for pike fishing

When spin fishing in particular, you are faced with an almost limitless choice of artificial lures. The most important ones are summarized below

Soft lures

Soft lures have become increasingly popular in recent years due to their varied and colorful selection. In addition, the soft baits lead to fewer missed bites and have a low startle effect on the fish. You can fish with soft lures in both shallow and deep waters. As a basic color principle, the deeper the water, the brighter and more eye-catching the soft lures you should use. Make sure that you attract perch and zander in particular with smaller soft lures. Therefore, choose larger soft lures for large pike.

Wobblers & crankbaits

Another popular artificial lure is the crankbait, which, unlike the soft lures, has a hard shape. This lure is also suitable for both shallow and deep waters. You can also vary here with the different color variants. Especially in murky water, eye-catching models are more promising.

The so-called crankbaits are a special type of wobbler. Due to their bulbous design, crankbaits displace a lot of water and create an enormous pressure wave under water, which attracts the pike.

Spoon

The spoon is the classic among pike lures. A large, slightly curved metal blade creates an unmistakable play of light under water when retrieved, which is intended to trick the pike into thinking it is a reeling and sick fish. In addition, the rotation under water creates a small pressure wave, which is just as attractive to the pike. Spinners come in a wide variety of shapes, colors and sizes and are primarily offered at medium depths.

Spinners

Spinners are one of the most popular artificial lures alongside spoons. The spinner has a rotating spinning blade, which ensures a great luring effect. With spinners, you can fish mainly on the surface of the water in a wide variety of shapes, colors and sizes, which is why the spinner proves to be particularly effective in spring and summer.

Jerkbaits

Jerkbaits are artificial lures that are characterized by a jerky action. The jerky movements ensure that a reeling prey fish is imitated. You can fish with jerkbaits in both shallow and deep water. Here, too, there are no limits to the shapes and colors.

Natural baits: baitfish

In addition to artificial baits, fishing with baitfish is a particularly effective way of catching pike all year round. Please note that in Germany  fishing with live baitfish is prohibited under the Animal Protection Act!

Mounting a float with a live baitfish has proven particularly effective for pike fishing. The baitfish is hooked on a treble hook or single hook and offered to the predatory fish at a depth of approx. 1 to 2 meters.
