Night is slowly falling, you have restocked your tackle and cast your rods to a promising spot. The rods are safely stored in the Rod Pod and the bite indicator is armed. You settle into your fishing tent and make yourself comfortable in your sleeping bag on the fishing bed. In the middle of the night, your bite indicator goes off, the spool of your free spool reel turns relentlessly and the fish takes a lot of line.  You quickly get out of your sleeping bag and head towards the rod. Shortly before the stop, flip the small lever on your baitrunner reel so that the previously set brake engages. The fish has hooked and you safely reel the large carp into your landing net.

The baitrunner reel

Baitrunner reels are the first choice when bottom fishing for large fish. Carp anglers in particular appreciate the drag-free line pull-off when the bail is closed. This means that the fish pulls line from your baitrunner reel without any effort after biting. The resistance-free line pull-off is particularly important so that the fish has time to pick up and hook the bait properly. Large fish in particular are very cautious and will spit out the bait at the slightest resistance. Furthermore, the baitrunner reel prevents your rod from being pulled out of the supports of your Rod Pod into the water. The baitrunner reel therefore gives you time to get to your fishing spot and then strike without having to rush.

The high-quality baitrunner reels are characterized by the fact that the line drag can be adjusted without drag resistance. Very cautious fish in particular, such as zander, eels and crucian carp, can be caught using a baitrunner reel. But baitrunner reels are also ideal for large fish weighing 15 kg or more, such as carp and catfish. However, even the best baitrunner reel is useless if the fish pulls the line completely off the spool.
